  • Data Systems Tend Towards Production: The article discusses three trends that have emerged in the field of data over the last five years. The first trend is that data systems tend towards production, meaning that the outputs of data teams are being used in increasingly important and production-grade use cases. The second trend is that data systems tend towards blind federation, where data outputs that were initially intended for a specific purpose are unknowingly adopted by many teams and use cases. The third trend is that data systems tend towards layerinitis, where data can be transformed at multiple steps throughout its journey and business logic lives in a variety of tools. These trends present both opportunities and challenges for data teams, and the article provides solutions for addressing the associated problems.

  • What’s Next for Data Engineering in 2023? 7 Predictions: The article discusses predictions for the future of data engineering in 2023 and beyond. The first prediction is that data engineering teams will spend more time on finops and data cloud cost optimization, as data becomes a larger portion of a company's spending and draws more scrutiny from finance. The second prediction is that data team roles will further specialize, with additional segmentation by business value or objective. The third prediction is that the data engineering ecosystem will continue to consolidate, with larger companies acquiring smaller ones to gain a competitive edge. The fourth prediction is that open source will continue to be a driving force in the data engineering world. The fifth prediction is that data engineering will become increasingly abstracted, with data engineers focusing on higher-level concepts and relying more on managed services.
